History
Historic homes, monuments and museums make up the biggest attractions in Macon. A trip to Ocmulgee National Monument looks back into centuries when Native Americans were the sole human occupants of the region. The Civil War is another major point on which the city focuses. Places like the Sidney Lanier Cottage, where the poet and soldier once lived, and the Tubman African American Museum explore this key era. Other sites explore times that are less famous but not any less interesting. The early 19th century outpost, Fort Hawkins, is one such site, as is the lovely late 19th century Riverside Cemetery.
