Fort Hawkins was built in 1806 as a military outpost by direct order of then president Thomas Jefferson. The fort was decommissioned in 1828 and a replica of the southeastern blockhouse was reconstructed in the 1930s using some of the original stones. Located adjacent to the Ocmulgee National Monument, the Fort is just east of the Coliseum Medical Center. Fort Hawkins is classified as a National Historic Treasure, and hosts an annual Fourth of July Extravaganza.
